2024
During the 2024 work trip, Cabins 13 and 14 underwent extensive renovations, including the replacement of all windows and the installation of Hardie® Plank siding with trim work. Some of the existing siding was too weak to support the new material and had to be replaced beforehand. The project was carried out by 14 volunteers from DIFF and the Core Banks Surf Fishing Club (CBSFC). The renovation began with Cabin 13, where windows and deteriorated wood were replaced, and old siding sections on both cabins were renewed. Additionally, new steps were built for the hot water heater closet in Cabin 13 before the siding installation commenced. A special acknowledgment was given to the dedicated volunteers, including Darrell McCormick, Johnny Ray, Lance Brown, Mike Ponticelli, Mike Matthews, Roger Massey, Roy Byrd, Scott Golla, Scott McCormick, Sonny Renegar, Travis Johnston, Wes Hart, Matt Doby, and Dylan Doby. Their hard work and commitment contributed to one of the most impressive renovation projects in over 30 years of organizing such efforts. Cabins 13 and 14 were praised as some of the best-built or renovated cabins on the island, with their improved appearance captured in a photograph from the road.

This year’s work trip saw 15 dedicated volunteers come together to focus on the Park Service’s top priority—installing new siding. Scott McCormick, Johnny Ray, and Darrell McCormick began work early Wednesday morning, removing old, deteriorated siding and replacing it with new material on Cabin 19 to ensure a solid foundation for the Hardie Plank® lap siding. Both Cabins 19 and 17 required significant repairs before the new siding could be installed. While most of the volunteers worked on siding, Alvin Tans and Roy Byrd focused on pre-painting the 1” x 4” trim boards. By Thursday morning, the siding crew had started installing lap siding on Cabin 19. Special thanks were extended to Cape Lookout National Seashore Superintendent Jeff West and his staff for their invaluable support and assistance during the trip. These work trips not only improve the park’s facilities but also provide an opportunity for CBSFC and DIFF members to build relationships with the park service staff. The dedicated volunteers who contributed to the project included Alvin Tans, Brian Trotter, Darrell McCormick, David Vestal, Ernie Holcomb, Johnny Ray, Kevin Davis, Lance Brown, Lee Hege, Michael Ponticelli, Mike Matthews, Roger Massey, Roy Byrd, Scott McCormick, and Tyler Buchanan.
